Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are treatable infections that are transmitted through sexual contact. Early detection through testing is essential to prevent long term damage to your sexual and reproductive health.

Some people who are infected with gonorrhea or chlamydia may experience painful or distressing symptoms. Other people may not have any symptoms at all. It’s important to get tested after a known exposure, even if you don’t feel sick.

Symptoms that might indicate an infection with gonorrhea or chlamydia include:

• Leakage or discharge from the penis or vagina
• Genital itching or burning
• Burning or pain with urination
• Painful intercourse
• Pain or swelling in one or both testicles

It is possible for gonorrhea or chlamydia to infect the throat or rectum as well. Infection in the throat may cause sore throat. Rectal infection may cause bleeding or discharge from your bottom, or painful changes in your bowel habits.

Getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also referred to as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), is crucial if you have been exposed to an STD or experiencing symptoms consistent with an STI.

These symptoms may include genital pain or itching, painful urination or abnormal discharge.

However, many individuals who are infected with an STD may never experience symptoms, which is why it’s so important to get tested after you’ve been exposed -- even if you don’t feel sick.

Our CLIA-certified lab performs PCR molecular testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia using the Binx.IO, which is approved by the FDA for the detection of gonorrhea and chlamydia using self-collected vaginal swabs for women, or urine samples for men. The Binx.IO test has an overall accuracy rate of 98%.

Great news! Keep in mind that it can take up to 2 weeks after exposure for gonorrhea or chlamydia to reach detectable levels. If your first negative test was less than 2 weeks after you were exposed, it’s a good idea to get tested again 2 weeks after the exposure occurred.

Rapid Result Lab does not evaluate rashes or ulcerations. I recommend you contact your healthcare provider or the health department for an exam and more extensive testing to determine the reason for your rash.

Some STIs, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) and syphilis, may cause rashes or ulcers on the skin. Scabies, crabs and pubic lice can also be spread through sexual contact and may result in skin irritation.

A physical exam from a healthcare provider will help you get the appropriate treatment.

According to current guidelines, you should abstain from sexual intercourse for 7 days AFTER you complete your round of antibiotics. So, if you had to take medicine for 7 days, you would wait another 7 days before having sex again. That is a total of 14 days without sexual intercourse. This is to ensure that the infection has been completely treated.

If you have gonorrhea, chlamydia or trichomonas, your sexual partner must also be treated before you start having sex again. Otherwise, you will continue to infect each other.  You and your partner should both wait for 7 days after completing treatment before resuming sexual activity.

Yes, men absolutely can get trichomonas. Testing and treatment are recommended for individuals who know they have been exposed.

Many people infected with trichomonas may not experience symptoms of illness and may not be aware of their infection.

Men infected with trichomonas may experience symptoms including:

              Pain with urination

              Itching or burning in the urethra (the “pee hole”)

              Painful ejaculation

              Frequent urination

Signs of trichomonas in women may include:

              Vaginal discharge, may be frothy, white, gray, yellow or green

              Bad odor

              Urinary discomfort or frequency

Trichomonas is a common STI and is easily treated with inexpensive antibiotics. You should get tested and treated if you have symptoms or if you have had sex with a person who is infected.

Yes. If you have been infected with gonorrhea or chlamydia, you are at risk of having other STIs, including HIV or syphilis.

Current medical guidelines indicate that any person who tests positive for gonorrhea or chlamydia should also be tested for HIV and syphilis.

Untreated STDs in pregnant women can carry risks for the baby and it’s important to get treated early to prevent harm. Most STDs are easily treated with common antibiotics that are safe to take during pregnancy. Your healthcare provider will be able to get you the most appropriate treatment to keep you and your baby safe.

If you are treated for an STD while pregnant, you may need to be retested after you’ve completed your treatment in order to make sure the infection is gone.

Additional testing may be required to determine the source of your discomfort, as those symptoms are consistent with several conditions. Your healthcare provider will help determine which additional tests are most appropriate. In addition to STD testing, they may test your urine for bacterial or yeast infection. It may take up to 14 days for chlamydia or gonorrhea to reach a level where it can be detected by tests. If you received a negative test taken less than 14 days after your exposure, you should be retested once it has been at least 14 days after the exposure.

Bacterias such as chlamydia and gonorrhea need a human host to survive and are not able to survive on surfaces such as toilet seats. This means that you won’t be infected from a contaminated toilet seat.

You will need to be tested for trichomonas and possibly treated again. You may also need to be tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea as well. Your boyfriend should be tested and treated also, even if he doesn’t have symptoms. It is very common for a person to get reinfected from an untreated partner.
